Apple iPhone SE Plus release date, rumors, specs, features

(Pocket Ribbon) – The Apple iPhone SE was announced on April 15, 2020. It is essentially the iPhone 8 in design, with the same aluminum and glass construction. And by all accounts, it has been extremely popular as it is an ideal replacement for those who want a new Home Button iPhone to replace an aging model.

However, since its launch almost two years ago, rumors of an iPhone SE Plus have still surfaced. Some suggest this will be a larger model of the iPhone SE (2020) with a larger screen, while others suggest the Plus refers to an upgrade in specs and the addition of 5G capabilities.

We’ve rounded up all the speculation surrounding the next Apple iPhone SE. Here’s everything we know so far.

Publication date

March 8, 2022Bigger iPhone SE in 2024?

Rumors about the next iPhone SE have been going around for a while, pretty much since the second generation came out. It was first claimed that a “Plus” model would be released sometime towards the end of 2020, which then moved to 2021. Of course neither happened.

More recently, the timeline has shifted to the first half of 2022, with multiple rumors and sources suggesting that the next iPhone SE — whether it’s called iPhone SE (2022), iPhone SE Plus or simply third-generation iPhone SE — is in March or April 2022. The most recent report claims that March 8 is the day to write in the calendar.

Normally, Apple holds a Spring event in March, while it’s also been two years since the second-generation iPhone SE came out, so it’s a reasonable suggestion that the next iPhone SE could arrive then. There are also claims that a larger iPhone SE could arrive in 2024.

Design

Based on the rumours, the next iPhone SE will feature a similar design to the current iPhone SE (2020). It appears that the Touch ID button will remain below the screen and that screen will remain the same size as the previous model.

The second-generation iPhone SE has a similar design to the iPhone 8 – as we mentioned – with rounded edges and a glass back. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see the next iPhone SE square and tie in with the rest of Apple’s portfolio, including the iPhone 13 series, but so far no renders or images have been leaked.

Display

The current Apple iPhone SE (2020) has a 4.7-inch display with a resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels. Any larger version of the SE would fit between this iPhone and the 6.1-inch iPhone 13, but that model is said to not be released until 2024.

Instead, the next iPhone SE is rumored to come with the same 4.7-inch screen as the iPhone SE (2020), along with Touch ID at the bottom, which sets it apart from the iPhone 13 mini.

The next iPhone SE will no doubt have True Tone, so the display will adapt to the environmental conditions to give you the best visuals, plus support for Dolby Vision and HDR10. It is unlikely to offer the 120Hz refresh rate found on the iPhone 13 Pro models.

Cameras

Same as iPhone 13? Portrait mode, portrait lighting, smart HDR Video recording up to 4K 60 fps

For now, there are no rumors about what camera capabilities the next iPhone SE will offer. There is a single camera on the iPhone SE 2020. It uses the same sensor as the iPhone 8, but with the smarts of the iPhone 11.

It’s possible that a next-gen iPhone SE will have a dual camera like the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, especially if it has the same chipset, but for now it’s guesswork.

What we would expect are features like Smart HDR, 4K video recording and night mode.

Hardware and Specifications

Apple A15 Bionic64/128/256GB storageWireless charging5G

The Apple iPhone SE (2020) runs on the Apple A13 Bionic platform, the same chip that powers the iPhone 11. The next iPhone SE is rumored to have the A15 chip under the hood, putting it on par with the iPhone 13 in terms of power. It is said to also offer 5G, which should make it the cheapest 5G iPhone.

The storage options are expected to remain 64/128/256 GB – the same as the current model – although so far there are no rumors describing them. Apple may drop the 64GB model in favor of a 128GB boot option like the iPhone 13, but it’s unclear for now.
