Disney Appoints Executive to Lead Metaverse Efforts

Entertainment giant Disney Tuesday named Mike White as senior vice president of next-generation storytelling and consumer experiences, according to a Reuters report.

White, who joined Disney in 2011, has held a variety of leadership roles over the past decade, including SVP of Park Experiences, Emerging Technology, and Innovation. He will now be responsible for leading the company’s metaverse strategy.

Before joining Disney, White spent ten years at Yahoo, where he rose to senior director of strategy and technology.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek claims the company is able to create “a new paradigm” that could potentially redefine entertainment:

Today we have the opportunity to connect those universes and create a whole new paradigm for how audiences experience and interact with our stories.

After a blockbuster quarter, Disney is now focused on expanding its sports streaming portfolio and developing its own metaverse. Chapek recently said the latter was “absolutely top of mind” for the entertainment giant.

It’s definitely top of mind because we realize that in the future you can call it whatever you want… you want to call it metavers.

As reported by U.Today, Disney recently published a job posting indicating that it planned to hire an expert in non-replaceable tokens.

Former Disney boss Bob Iger predicted that NFTs could explode in popularity, with piracy identified as their number one problem.
