Free up space on your Android by updating a single app

Regardless of the size of your Android phone’s internal storage, it can be a struggle to make sure you have enough space. As applications and mobile games grow, so does their size. Tap or click for eight easy tips to speed up and clean your Android phone.

Shooting high-resolution videos and taking lots of photos is a great way to quickly fill up your phone’s storage space. Of course, you can always move some elements to the cloud, but they won’t be available if you don’t have mobile data.

But there is another solution to free up much-needed space. Read on to see how you can increase storage space by updating a single app.

Here’s the backstory

Google has a lot of tools in the Android mobile operating system that you can tinker with. One of these is called Files by Google and is intended to be a single app that helps you organize and access all kinds of documents, photos, and data on your device.

But the biggest problem that many Android users experience is that Files by Google can be clunky at times, and it’s not always clear how to operate it. However, Google has made some changes in recent months.

Daily tech news that matters to you

Privacy, security, the latest trends and the information you need to live your best digital life.

For example, it has added a Favorites folder for quick navigation and better integration of Google Photos so that you can delete images on your device after backing up to the cloud.

For some, that may not be enough free space. As mentioned before, apps and mobile games have become more prominent and can easily make up the bulk of your device’s storage. A recent update to Files by Google now makes it easier to see which apps are taking up the most space.

What can you do about it?

While you can navigate to the Play Store and manage installed apps from there, the updated Files app does that effectively too. When you open the Files app and navigate to the “Apps” tab, you’ll notice the addition of intelligent chip filtering options.

By tapping “Large Apps”, Files by Google displays applications of significant size. This way you can easily see which apps are taking up the most space. By combining that with the chip “Unused apps” you immediately have an overview of the most prominent apps that you have never used. There is also a chip that only shows you games, and you can combine multiple chips to search better.

As Android Police points out, you will only see a list of major unplayed games if you activate all three chips. This new filtering in Files by Google makes it incredibly easy to quickly and efficiently remove applications that are taking up valuable space.

Don’t be alarmed if you open the updated Files by Google app for the first time and a notification appears. After the update, it may again request permission to access your data, including your apps, photos, and other files.
