Google is finally coming back to the Indian smartphone market after a two-year hiatus when they officially launch the Pixel 6a in India. However, there are a number of challenges for the tech giant as they enter their second innings in the country.
Google’s Pixel range of smartphones has a very strong following in India. Despite the fact that the Pixel 6 has never been officially launched in the country, sellers like Amazon are selling an imported and unlocked version of the Pixel 6 in India for a good premium. Although a potential customer could not claim the warranty on the device and paid a hefty premium on top of the high price, there were still several people who actually bought and used the phone.
It is clear that there is a significant number of tech enthusiasts and potential customers waiting for the official launch of the Pixel 6a. But will it be the big hit that Google hopes to be? Well, we look at the challenges that stand in their way.
After sales service:
Even when they officially released their devices in India, the Pixel had a reputation for not being a serviceable device, mainly because there weren’t enough service centers to do repairs. And of the few outlets that could operate Pixel devices, most did a terrible job. Repair times would add up to weeks, and more often than not, finding basic replacement parts would be a nightmare. Google clearly needs to improve their service centers and service network if it is to capture a significant portion of the Indian market.
India is a very price sensitive market which is why most smartphone manufacturers offer their customers great hardware and some really good deals right when a device is launched. The bad news for Google is that the price at which they are likely to launch the Pixel 6a, which is around Rs 40,000, is considered premium with manufacturers offering some top-notch features such as very powerful SoCs and some great cameras. The good news for Google is that this price point is booming and people want to see what a player like Google has to offer. They have the SoC and the software to make this happen. The camera, especially at this price point, is something to be concerned about.
If there are any rumors, Google is planning to launch the Pixel 6a around the Dussehra/Diwali festivities. Google can’t afford to mess up the supply of units if they actually start selling the devices. Nor can they afford to order a lot of inventory and risk most of them being left on the shelves when the festivities are over. They will have to manage their stock and inventory in a way that they haven’t done in a long time.
Google’s two-year hiatus
Perceptions are important, which is why smartphone manufacturers launch multiple devices every year. Since Google Pixel has been conspicuously absent from the smartphone market for quite some time, people who aren’t exactly tech enthusiasts will be apprehensive.
