Make group calls on Alexa or your Echo device

(Pocket Ribbon) – Amazon has expanded the functionality of Alexa Calling to allow you to call groups via Alexa devices, such as the Echo Show. It is designed to let you interact with everyone at once in an easy way.

Video calling saw a huge increase through 2020 when this change took effect, and the addition to Alexa’s abilities will make the Echo – or even your phone – even more useful for keeping in touch with up to seven people in a group.

The update was announced in September 2020.

How To Set Up And Make Alexa Group Calls

There are a few things you need to do to get a group setup, but only one person needs to create the group to get started. Let’s pretend you’re making a family group.

Open the Alexa app. You can use the Android or iPhone apps for this, but make sure you are using the latest version. Tap Communicate and then the contacts icon in the top right corner. Tap on Add New and you will be given the option to add a new group or contact, select Group. Select the family members you want in the group, use the search function if necessary. Note that Alexa needs access to your contacts to make these additions. If you haven’t imported any contacts, tap the contacts menu (top right) and select Import contacts. Once you’ve selected all the members of the family group – up to six people (you’re the seventh) – tap Continue at the bottom of the page, then you’ll be asked to name your group. This is the group name that Alexa will recognize, so make sure it’s something easy to understand, like Family. Remember that everyone in the group can see the group name, so make sure it’s appropriate. When you’re done, press Create Group. Your family group will now be displayed above your contacts, all members of the group will be notified and you can use that group for Alexa calls. Say “Alexa, call my family” and an Alexa Call will be placed in the family group.

One thing to note is that there is no protection or management for groups. Anyone can create them and anyone can change the members of that group.

Happy Alexa group calling!
