Release date, price, features, how to buy

(Pocket Ribbon) – Valve’s Long Rumors steam deck is now official. Well almost. The Switch-esque handheld gaming device was set to release in the US and UK later this year, but Valve delayed the launch by two months.

Here’s what you need to know.

What is Valve Steam Deck?

Have you ever wished you could play more of your favorite PC games on Switch?

Well, in July 2021, Valve unveiled Steam Deck, a portable gaming PC that could shake the portable market on a massive scale.

The Steam Deck gives you access to your entire existing Steam library immediately after logging in. It runs on a custom SteamOS, which allows you to download and play games like Doom Eternal. You can also install and operate PC software on it, including a web browser, other game stores such as the Epic Games Store, and video streaming services. It can even be connected to a monitor and gaming peripherals such as a keyboard and mouse, or a controller.

And thanks to the cloud-saving feature, you can retrieve game save files seamlessly between your Steam Deck and PC.

What does Valve Steam Deck offer?

Steam Deck has a 7-inch 1280 x 800 touchscreen for 720p gameplay. It is touch sensitive, so you can also control suitable games that way.

In terms of power, each Steam Deck offers the same power of 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and an AMD APU with a quad-core Zen 2 CPU with eight threads and eight compute units of AMD RDNA 2 graphics. However, three different storage tiers are available: 64 GB eMMC storage, 256 GB NVMe SSD storage, and 512 GB fast NVME SSD storage. You can also expand the storage on each of the models via microSD.

The Steam Deck features 16 GB of unified LPDDR5 memory, with a total of 88 GB/s of bandwidth. The GPU will apparently be able to access up to 8GB of that shared memory.

Other features include built-in microphones, a gyroscope for motion control, and a “40 watt-hour battery that provides several hours of playtime for most games.” Valve says the Steam Deck can charge and play at the same time and will come with a 45-watt power supply.

We’ve also now heard that it will target 30FPS on games as the minimum expected performance, although that will certainly vary by title.

It has a USB-C port that provides external display support for up to two 4K monitors at 60Hz. The specs also mean that Steam Deck supports AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, making upscaling comparable to Nvidia’s DLSS.

Steam Deck has two thumbsticks and two Steam Controller-style trackpads under the thumbstick that can mimic the feeling of using a mouse. The front of the handheld machine also has ABXY buttons and a D-pad. As with the Switch, Steam Deck comes with two shoulder triggers on each side, and there are four back buttons (two on each side) for even more options.

Steam Deck provides access to the Steam library and runs a version of Steam OS optimized for mobile gaming. The operating system is actually based on Linux. In fact, Steam Deck can be used by more advanced users as a full-fledged Linux computer. Valve said you can plug in a mouse, keyboard, and monitor — plus you can install PC software on it, browse the web, and use it to access other game stores. It features cloud storage for syncing files between devices, and it has a pause/resume feature to force the device into sleep mode.

Other features include chat, notifications, and the ability to stream games directly from your PC to Steam Deck via Valve’s Remote Play feature.

Valve plans to sell a dock that you can use to hang a Steam Deck and connect it to external displays or TVs. However, it is not required and will also be released a bit after the console as it has not yet been shown. Valve said that Steam Deck can be connected to your TV, monitor or “even your old CRT if you have the right cables”. The Stem Deck comes with USB-C ports that hold HDMI, Ethernet, and USB data, as well as Bluetooth.

When will Valve Steam Deck launch?

Valve recently announced that it will ship its highly anticipated Steam Deck handheld console next month.

According to the company blog and a tweetSteam Deck will go on sale February 25, 2022. Customers who have a reservation will receive an email notification that day and have three days to place an order. Emails will be sent in the same order that the reservations were made, and you can only purchase the Steam Deck model you originally reserved. Valve will release new batches every week for those who got a reservation.

Your deposit will be applied and shipping will be included, Valve said. Orders placed on the 25th will ship on the 28th.

Keep in mind that Valve first announced Steam Deck in July 2021, promising it would ship in December. Valve eventually delayed the release date by two months due to supply chain issues. But now it seems that was the only real delay. Valve also still lets you pre-order the Steam Deck for $5.

However, if you reserve now, the order page currently states that you can expect it “after Q2 2022”.

How to reserve Valve Steam Deck

Reservations first opened in July 2021, initially for users who made purchases on Steam before June 2021. All three options were available for reservation. In fact, they’re still available, although the delivery date is still a long way off – you’ll get your console sometime after Q2 2022 if you pre-order one now.

There is a $5 refundable reservation fee and a limit of one reservation per person. Please note that this is not a pre-order; it just puts you in a queue to order the device. When inventory is available, customers will be notified in the order in which reservations have been made to make their purchase.

Where will Valve Steam Deck be available?

The first units of Steam Deck will launch in February 2022 in the US, Canada, the EU and the UK, with other territories to follow later in the year.
