Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ release date, rumors and news

(Pocket Ribbon) – Samsung’s Galaxy S21 range was launched in January 2021, so we’re not far from the expected arrival of their successors.

While not much is official yet, there has been a lot of speculation about the Galaxy S22 lineup, which is expected to be the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra.

We covered the Galaxy S22 Ultra in a separate feature, while here we look at everything we’ve heard so far about the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus models.

Release date and price

Unpacked almost confirmed for February 8, 2022From €849 for the S22From €1049 for the S22+

The Samsung Galaxy S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra were unveiled in January 2021, which was a few months ahead of the company’s typical timeline for the launch of the Galaxy S series.

For 2022, the cycle has shifted a bit, with the S21 FE arriving in early January and Samsung almost confirming that the Unpacked reveal event will be on February 8, 2022.

Price-wise, the Galaxy S21 started at £769 in the UK and $799 in the US. The Galaxy S21+ started at £949 in the UK and $999 in the US. Rumors have it that the S22 will start at €849 (about £730/$975), while the S22+ will start at €1049 (about £900/$1210).

‘Glasstic’ on standard modelProminent camera bodyS Penholder on S22 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S22 series is likely to share design cues like the S21 series does. There will no doubt be some changes over the 2021 range, but they may be minor changes than those between the S20 range and S21 range.

Rumors and renders suggest a minor change, but nothing substantial, with the camera body moving to a separate island rather than wrapping around the frame again for the S22 and S22+.

We’d expect premium handsets across the range, but it’s likely the standard S22 will at least opt for a plastic back rather than glass – AKA ‘Glasstic’ – as the S21 did. However, water resistance is expected on all S22 models and USB Type-C charging.

We also expect a prominent camera body on all models and a perforated front camera. Despite the Galaxy Z Fold 3 offering an under-display camera, the Galaxy S22 series is said to not be using it.

6.06-inch/6.55-inch Full HD+ resolution likely 120 Hz refresh rate Thinner edges?

The Samsung Galaxy S21 has a 6.2-inch display and the S21+ has a 6.7-inch display. Rumors suggest that the Galaxy S22 and S22+ will be smaller, with the S22 having a 6.06-inch display and the S22+ a 6.55-inch display. There are also claims of slim bezels and more rounded corners.

We expected the standard S22 and S22+ to offer Full HD+ resolutions, as well as flat panel displays, as was the case for the S21 and S21+.

Support for HDR and a refresh rate of 120 Hz are expected on all S22 models.

Hardware and Specifications

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Exynos 2200 chipsets (regional differences) Minimum 8GB RAM No charger in box

It is currently not clear what the Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ will offer in terms of hardware. It is likely that there will be a split between Qualcomm and Exynos chipsets depending on the region, as has been the case for a number of years now. While Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon platform, 8 Gen, was officially unveiled in December 2021, the next-generation Exynos 2200 chipset is expected to be used in Korea’s regional handsets. This chip was unveiled in January 2022.

As for other specs, it’s likely that the S22 will offer at least 8GB of RAM just like its predecessor, and it comes in a base model with at least 128GB of storage. The S21 series does not have microSD support, so we suspect the S22 series is unlikely to reintroduce it. Based on rumours, the S22 and S22+ will come with 8GB of RAM and in 128GB and 256GB storage options.

It’s certain that all S22 handsets will be 5G compatible based on that platform usage, and we expect the S22 to also support fast charging and fast wireless charging.

Samsung has confirmed that the wall charger won’t come in the box — a move Apple made for its iPhone 12 series and continued for the iPhone 13 series — it’ll just be the cable on hand.

Rumors claim that the Galaxy S22 will have a 3800mAh battery and the S22+ will have a 4600mAh battery. There are also claims of 3700mAh for the Galaxy S22 and 4500mAh for the Galaxy S22+, both of which are smaller than their respective predecessors.

No ToF sensor Triple rear camera

Rumors have it that the triple rear camera on the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ will consist of a 50-megapixel main sensor, plus two 12-megapixel sensors for ultra-wide and telephoto, with the telephoto camera capable of 3x zoom.

There are also reports that the ToF sensor is also not returning on the Galaxy S22 – like not on the S21 model.
