Sony Xperia 5 IV suggests incoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus

(Pocket Ribbon) – Sony’s smaller line of handsets, the Xperia 5, is expected to appear in its fourth-generation 2022 release as the Xperia 5 IV, succeeding the Xperia 5 III (which we tested in late 2021).

But the name of the product isn’t the biggest part of the story: it’s the suggestion that it will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus in it. The ‘Plus’ is the big takeaway, as the alleged boarding platform hasn’t even been announced by Qualcomm yet.

Plus, however, would follow the chipmaker’s typical naming convention, as the temporary processor that will appear ahead of a typical year-end announcement (for what will most likely be 8 Gen 2). It is still unclear exactly what the Plus version will bring to the table, but expect a little more computing power.

Otherwise, the Xperia 5 IV’s leaked spec so far reads a bit like an intermediate device, frankly, with that processor rumor being the biggest feature on the spec sheet. Elsewhere, the 6.1-inch display and triple rear camera system (using three 12MP sensors) are an exact echo of the previous Xperia 5 III.

However, the fourth-generation Xperia handset is expected to get a slight battery boost from 4,500mAh to an undisclosed capacity.

When will we know more? We will, MWC 2022 in Barcelona is just around the corner, but we doubt Qualcomm or Sony will reveal such future plans – it just seems a bit too soon after the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 announcement and too close to the Xperia 5 III’s October 2021 release date.
