One of the first changes Apple made to AirTags shortly after they were released is an intermittent beep when separated from their owner. This makes it easier to find if they are lost or used to spy on someone. Now AirTags appear for sale online, modified so that the speaker no longer makes any noise. This has dangerous consequences.

Here’s the backstory

It’s sad but not surprising that bad actors have found ways to use AirTags to track people without their knowledge. To counter this, Apple has implemented a feature that alerts you with a notification if someone else’s AirTag moves with you.

AirTags also beep randomly between 8 and 24 hours after being separated from their owner. This can warn you if you have an AirTag that you know nothing about.
