Viral TikTok Video Shows Fast, Easy Way To Clean A Air Fryer

Many smart people on social media would like to show you some valuable life hacks. Some of the hacks are genius, from quickly inflating a tire to five clever digital life hacks you won’t find on TikTok.

Of course, countless hacks explained on social media will make it easier in the kitchen. But just because someone does it online doesn’t mean it actually works. For example, a viral clip shows how to clean an airfryer in record time.

Not only is this “hack” an unreliable cleaning method, it can damage your airfryer — or worse. Here’s the viral TikTok advice you should avoid.

Here’s the backstory

Airfryers have become extremely popular in recent years, as the small kitchen appliances can cook, bake or fry almost anything with hot air. They use less oil than conventional cooking, can save you money on your energy bill, and allow you to cook more healthy options.

Like any other appliance, air fryers need to be cleaned regularly. For a quick and easy way to clean it, follow the instructions in this TikTok video. Or you can follow the directions in your owner’s manual as this method is potentially dangerous.

In the video, the person explains that you can easily clean your air fryer by putting some washing-up liquid and water in half of the basket. Then the person sets the fryer to run at 200°F for three minutes. As if by magic, the basket is sparkling clean when the timer runs out and they pour out the water.

If you understand how airfryers work, you will immediately see the flaw in this hack. Hot air circulates in and with that much water there is a real risk of it entering the circuit. The fryer can also use a tremendous amount of power to “boil” the water, causing the unit to overheat and burst into flames.

What can you do about it?

There are several things you should never put in an air fryer, and half a basket of water is definitely on the list. Our advice is to only follow the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations for airfryers or other products.

Other things you should never try to air fry are:

Cheese (because the melted dairy product drips and sticks to the basket) Raw rice (because the temperature is not high enough) Broccoli (because it contains less moisture and dries out quickly) Wet batter (because it drips into the basket) and at the base burn) Spices (because the air can blow it out and into the components) Sugary foods (because the air can blow the sticky liquid into the circuit)
